| New EMC Directive Now in Effect |
After years of discussion, the new Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2004/108/EC went into effect on July 20, 2007. Applicable to most electrical and electronic products, this directive is considered to be a horizontal standard because it crosses horizontal markets of electronic products such as Information Technology Equipment, Electrical Medical Devices, Appliances, etc. The EMC Directive covers both emission and immunity requirements and references updated harmonized standards that are published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Click here to view the new Directive on the European Union Web site. Additionally, TÜV SÜD America Inc. has been recognized by the European Commission as a Notified Body, able to perform all related services for EMC Directive 2004/108/EC. This recognition means that TÜV can review and assess product manufacturers technical documentation and verify compliance with the new European EMC Directive. Once an assessment is made, as a Notified Body TÜV can issue a Statement of Opinion to assure compliance with the New EMC Directive 2004/108/EC. As a recognized Notified Body and an ECANB (European Community Association of EMC Notified Bodies) group member on the CIRCA Web site, TÜV has access to technical guidance notes and peer discussions on EMC-related topics, providing additional insight to our customers. TÜV SÜD America also offers Ask the EMC Expert on its Web site, where individual questions can be asked and will be answered by compliance experts.
